We all know about the tragedy that recently struck Japan – earthquakes and aftershocks, the following tsunami, nuclear scares, and a rising death toll. Many people want to help in any way that they can, and every small donation can make a big difference. A long-time Maggie’s customer and friend came to us last week with information about Socks for Japan.

Many Japanese fled the disaster without shoes on and are trying to survive in freezing temperatures. A dry, warm pair of socks can be comforting and victims have even requested socks in interviews. Together with Peggy Mauro, we are sending 90 pair of socks for men, women and children to Japan to help in some way.

With each pair of socks, we included a note that said, translated to Japanese: “We are very sorry for your enormous loss. We hope these socks will give you some comfort. They are made with organic cotton to help heal the earth. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.”

For all that they have gone through, we hope something as small as a pair of socks can bring them comfort. For more information about this relief effort, please visit the Socks for Japan website. Even if you do not choose to donate through this organization, please find another and do what you can to help the people of Japan.

We retro-fitted over 50 light fixtures throughout the office and warehouse and replaced all T12 lamps and ballasts with T8. The process of retro-fitting removes not only the T12 lamps, but also the magnetic ballasts which consume (and waste) a lot of energy, in the form of heat. The new T12 lamps have a higher light output and electronic ballasts, which reduces overall energy consumption.

As an eco-conscious company, we try to do as much as we can to minimize our ecological footprint and practice sustainability. Lighting is just one way to make a difference, but there are plenty of things you can do in your everyday life to live sustainably.
